Look for the Decca Hospitality Booth at HD

Cornell University names InTypes

I just came across this cool article. At Cornell University, they have since 1997 been working on identifying contemporary design practices that have not been named, naming them, and providing designers with an interior-specific, history-specific, and contemporary design-specific vocabulary. They call in Intypes, and they are very interesting. Check out the website data base they have compliled, and see some of the vocabulary below.

NEWH W Hotel Tour

We had a great turn out for the NEWH W. Hotel Tour. Over 70 people came out to see the hotel. We raised a total of $1500 which will go to scholarships for future members of the hospitality community. Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming invite to the Scholarship Awards ceremony coming up on September 30th. Thanks Lynda Welte, a multi line rep of Blue Prints for Design, for many of these photos.

Thrillist Announces new Restaurant in Alexandria

Feast: The Burger Joint Old Town
106 N. Washington St; Old Town; 703.299.9791 Opening today, the Joint's a purple-walled, homeroom-chaired diner rocking with wall-mounted guitars and album cover paintings (Chicago, Springsteen's butt!); the menu's the same as their Bethesda location, from the applewood smoked bacon "Burger", to the slow-roasted pork/Serrano ham/Swiss "Cuban"; to the Throwdown with Bobby Flay-winning, ground lamb/cumin/mint/tzatziki/feta "Greek"; to the disturbingly literal "9 Pounder": actually weighing in at 15.4lbs after giant bun, 2 heads of lettuce, 8 tomatoes, 3 red onions, and 4 whole pickles, it's served with a bottle of Maalox, and a lifetime of celibacy. Check out the rest of the menu, featuring the term "impossibly flavorful", at BurgerJointDC.com

The Most Important Interior Design Contest Ever

Every year since 2002, the Cintas Corporation has selected the nation’s most prestigious privies and solicited Internet votes to decide the winners of the America’s Best Restroom Award. Top prize this year goes to a piece of over-the-top lavatory opulence in Branson, Missouri: the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre, whose ladies’ room (above) includes stained-glass windows, cut orchids, granite-and-onyx sinks, chandeliers, and a “ceiling reproduced from the 1890’s Empire Period.” Yow.

The other four finalists are not quite as lavish:

In New York, Radio City Music Hall’s 1930s-era restrooms feature classic tile work and Art Deco details.

Best Restrooms voters aslo liked the columns-and-chandeliers look of the 1866 Tremont Plaza Hotel, in Baltimore.

It’s a shame that these picks are so unimaginative, as there have been a few really interesting restroom designs in recent years. Two in New York leap to mind:

There’s Frank Gehry’s multichromatic tile extravaganza for his IAC headquaters

… . and the thoroughly glam restrooms in the New Museum. Oh, well—maybe next year.
