From Thrillist- NEW BUDDHA BAR IN DC!
Buddha Bar
Karmic cuisine, re-incarnated
Now taking reservations for a May 10th opening: 455 Massachusetts Ave NW; 202.377.5555
A much-anticipated Parisian import, BB's DC incarnation's a massive, elegantly gorge-worthy nirvana, with a front 50-seat lounge and 20-seat bar beneath a massive Asian dragon tattoo-mural, and a sprawling main dining room feng shui'd out with classy chandeliers, silk drapings, and the eponymous centerpiece: an 18ft tall, "onyx black"-finished Buddha, blessed in a pre-opening ceremony by monks, drummers, dragon-dancers, and a martial artist after flying "10,613 miles from the jungles of Indonesia"...and boy were its 10ft-long divine arms tired! The French-influenced, pan-Asian deliciousness comes via a Korean-born chef, with cooked grub including roasted black cod, Five Spice Chicken, wok-fried beef with basil, and a candied fruit-accompanied "lacquered Peking Duck", sure to varnish right before your eyes. More edible goodness, like the aforementioned, will largely follow Paris's menu, with sushi like a lobster roll and black sesame Tuna Tataki, while booze includes 27 premium sakes (two sparkling), and a 20-strong specialty cocktail list with highlights like the Stoli Vanilla/pear/Serrano chili peppers Burn, and the Apple Pucker/vodka/passion fruit/strawberry liquor Fire Buddha, which hopefully wasn't done without a generous reverence package.
In the coming weeks and months, Buddha'll veer off the Parisian menu, adding/subtracting dishes and cocktails to give the joint a "DC twist" -- also the name of your one of your more bizarre cravings that may never be satisfied.

Chalupa Architekti Unveil Green Roofed Czech Embassy for DC
The award to design the new Czech Embassy in Washington DC was recently given to Prague-based Chalupa Architekti. Deeply rooted in its connection to its surrounding environment, the new embassy is marked by ample daylighting and a gorgeous green roof that seamlessly melts into its site.
Chalupa Architekti’s design for the new embassy seeks to present the Czech Republic as “open, confident, friendly, helpful, and respectful, considerate to Nature and the environment in general, firmly rooted in rich cultural traditions and with respect to democratic principles; and always ready to help.” The embassy’s consideration of nature and the environment can easily be seen in their extensive green roof as well how the green spaces lead right up to the edge of the building.
Chalupa’s design divides the site into three distinct garden areas — a private garden space linked to quiet apartments and office spaces, a grand facade of frosted glass for visitors that curves to echo the circular driveway, and a generous garden space linked to the main lounges of the building. This last and larger garden is meant for the many social functions the embassy hosts and has a direct visual link to the ambassador’s home. With the narrow design of the embassy, natural light infiltrates from all angles and reaches into the interior.

Kelley Proxmire Interior Design Politicians may wrangle in Washington, but design partisans in the region aren't filibustering -- they're heading to the third annual DC Design House, now welcoming visitors through May 9 in the Maryland suburb of Chevy Chase. Benefiting the Children’s Hospital Foundation of the Children’s National Medical Center, this year’s Design House features rooms by 22 designers in a 10,000-square-foot Beaux Arts brick mansion at 3911 Bradley Lane, which once served as the site for Harry S. Truman’s presidential inauguration party, as well as the residence of the ambassador of Uruguay. The spaces include a reception room by Nestor Santa-Cruz, an artist’s studio by Tracy Morris, and a master dressing room by Celia Welch.

“For our third year, we wanted to select a home whose historical significance, prestige and living spaces would beautifully complement the talents of our chosen designers,” says Skip Singleton, co-chair of the DC Design House. “This year’s designs are poised to be our best yet, and we couldn’t be happier to create a visual and inspirational experience for visitors that will in turn benefit the Children’s National Medical Center.” Tickets to the house are $20 and can be purchased in person or in advance on the DC Design House website. Furnishings in the house are also available to purchase, with a percentage of the sales also going to the Children’s National Medical Center.
