DesignDC 2009 Keynote Address: Rollin Stanley Tuesday, July 14, 10:15 – 11:45am
We Can Do Better: A Frank Discussion About Design and Growth in the 'Burbs
Montgomery County planners are beginning to rethink growth management to enhance quality of place in their communities.
Planning Director Rollin Stanley will discuss innovative ways to bring the natural environment into the design of buildings, spaces and streets with the goal of creating great places with better connections. Design can incorporate with connections, diversity and the environment to create true communities. “With only 4 percent of the Montgomery County left to build on, it is time to rethink how we have created our built environment,” describes Stanley. “When we strategize about how best to redevelop strategically, no matter where it is, our challenge is to create better connections, strive for environmental quality, create more diversity and elevate our design expectations.”
Rollin Stanley,
AICP, Planning Director, Montgomery County Planning Department
Since February 2008, Rollin Stanley has served as director of the Montgomery County Planning Department. In that position, Rollin has directed work on community plans ‐‐ including visions for Germantown, Gaithersburg West and White Flint –as well as shepherding reports on such high‐profile issues as the Purple Line, the Falklands redevelopment and affordable housing. Overall, Rollin has steered staff and the Planning Board toward new ways of thinking about growth, focusing on transit‐oriented development and urban design. As Planning Director of Montgomery County, Mr. Stanley leads one of the largest planning agencies in the country. They are leading the discussion on urbanizing a diverse county, which includes urban centers like Bethesda, while implementing the pioneering “gricultural preserve”policy through transfer of development rights. Previously, Rollin held top planning jobs in St. Louis and Toronto. A five‐year tenure in St. Louis included authoring a comprehensive strategic plan that outlined ways to revitalize the historic city. Stanley also laid the roundwork for a 1.3‐mile‐long civic open space corridor that will eventually bisect the city, and he oversaw staff teams addressing neighborhood revitalization, tax incentives and other initiatives. Before his stint in St. Louis, Stanley spent 20 years in Toronto as a planner who was instrumental in transforming the city’ industrial district into a mix of residential and retail. Mr. Stanley has a degree in urban and regional planning from Ryerson University, Toronto. He is the division chairman in the American Planning Association, and he has lectured and consulted in China, Canada, England and the United States.
