Vastu- Summer Bash. July 30th

(Interaction Design winner) and Andrew Blauvelt of Walker Art Center (Corporate and Institutional Achievement winner) will discuss the future of interaction design. Han designs and programs the technology that transforms our relationship to work and the world at large. Most recently, Perceptive Pixel became renowned for completely transforming the way television broadcasters, including CNN, Fox and ABC, covered the historic 2008 Presidential elections. As the co-founder of Rocky Mountain Institute, Lovins has been a leading voice in sustainable thinking for 40 years, acting as a consultant for more than 50 countries and some of the largest multinational corporations in the world. Moggridge is the co-founder of IDEO, a global design consultancy that has transformed the way that design is conceived and realized. He designed the first laptop computer and is a pioneer in the field of interaction design. Together, Moggridge and Lovins will discuss the symbiotic relationship between technology and sustainability and the impact of both upon the future. This program is free to the public. IIDA Presents WMCC Sustainability Working Group: Maximizing Daylighting and View Potential on LEED Projects

Thursday, July 16 Robert Phinney, AIA, LEED AP, of Wisnewski-Blair & Associates, is going to be teaching a program on the best approaches for earning the EQc8, Daylight & Views, credits for LEED-NC and LEED-CI projects.

+ Shading and Shelving
+ Window Treatment Integration
+ and Calculations - with a focus on the Daylight Factor Approach

NEWH- Tiger Woods AT&T Tournament

I had the pleasure, Sunday, of attending the NEWH hosted event the Tiger Woods AT&T Classic at Congressional Country Club in MD. (Thank you to Templeton Hospitality Carpet for my ticket!) It was the perfect day to attend. Not only was it the final day of the tournament, which Tiger himself won, but the weather was perfect, and the company couldn't be beat. NEWH raised over $35,000 at this event, which is one of their largest fundraisers of the year. The money they raise will go to fund scholarships for college students hoping to one day persue a career in the Hospitality Industry. Congrats NEWH on a great event and now take a look at some of the people who came out!

Art, Wine and Design Reception at Lorton Workhouse- July 11, 2009

Art, Wine and Design Reception 9601 Ox RoadLorton, VA 22079 In conjunction with each of the 2nd Saturday Art Walks at the Workhouse in Lorton VA, the Association of Interior Design Professionals (AIDP) will present a Art, Wine and Design reception from 6PM to 7PM in Gallery W-16. AIDP and LAF are partnering to bring together artists, interior design professionals and the public to highlight the creative incorporation of original art into interior design settings. All are invited to talk art and design with these creative design professionals. Perhaps you have just purchased an original piece of art but you are just not sure where or how to showcase it in your home. Perhaps you have a design space in your home that needs a beautiful piece of art. Bring your fabric swatches, room photos, creativity and questions and join a creative group of artists and interior designers for a lively and informative discussion of art and design. As the reception ends at 7PM, join the designers as they visit more than 100 artists in their studio buildings. Their studio doors will be open wide until 9PM as part of the 2nd Saturday art walks. 2nd Saturday Art Walks at the Workhouse and Art, Wine and Design reception dates for 2009: July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12.

We Can Do Better: A Frank Discussion About Design and Growth in the 'Burbs
Montgomery County planners are beginning to rethink growth management to enhance quality of place in their communities.
Planning Director Rollin Stanley will discuss innovative ways to bring the natural environment into the design of buildings, spaces and streets with the goal of creating great places with better connections. Design can incorporate with connections, diversity and the environment to create true communities. “With only 4 percent of the Montgomery County left to build on, it is time to rethink how we have created our built environment,” describes Stanley. “When we strategize about how best to redevelop strategically, no matter where it is, our challenge is to create better connections, strive for environmental quality, create more diversity and elevate our design expectations.”

Since February 2008, Rollin Stanley has served as director of the Montgomery County Planning Department. In that position, Rollin has directed work on community plans ‐‐ including visions for Germantown, Gaithersburg West and White Flint –as well as shepherding reports on such high‐profile issues as the Purple Line, the Falklands redevelopment and affordable housing. Overall, Rollin has steered staff and the Planning Board toward new ways of thinking about growth, focusing on transit‐oriented development and urban design. As Planning Director of Montgomery County, Mr. Stanley leads one of the largest planning agencies in the country. They are leading the discussion on urbanizing a diverse county, which includes urban centers like Bethesda, while implementing the pioneering “gricultural preserve”policy through transfer of development rights. Previously, Rollin held top planning jobs in St. Louis and Toronto. A five‐year tenure in St. Louis included authoring a comprehensive strategic plan that outlined ways to revitalize the historic city. Stanley also laid the roundwork for a 1.3‐mile‐long civic open space corridor that will eventually bisect the city, and he oversaw staff teams addressing neighborhood revitalization, tax incentives and other initiatives. Before his stint in St. Louis, Stanley spent 20 years in Toronto as a planner who was instrumental in transforming the city’ industrial district into a mix of residential and retail. Mr. Stanley has a degree in urban and regional planning from Ryerson University, Toronto. He is the division chairman in the American Planning Association, and he has lectured and consulted in China, Canada, England and the United States.
