Washington Business Journal, the Greater Washington Board of Trade and sponsor Washington Gas are pleased to announce the second annual Green Business Summit and Awards on October 13, 2009. Meet companies from all over Greater Washington that are working to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into their businesses and community work. This year, the summit will host a tradeshow showcasing their sustainable products, services, and practices as well as breakout sessions featuring experts from all aspects of green business. The sessions will address the following topics:

VA Chapter of NEWH Presents....

Best selling author Don Gabor will be bringing his interpersonal communication training skills to Richmond, Virginia on Monday, October 19. Sponsored by NEWH Inc. Virginia Chapter and The Richmond Times-Dispatch, Don will be conducting a seminar with a timely theme: The Importance of Networking in Today’s Economy. He will provide tips on how to remember names, how to join a group in conversation and how to best work the crowd at a networking event.


Don’s newest book, Turn Small Talk into Big Deals, is a radical way of approaching networking opportunities by identifying the four networking personality styles: Outgoing, Competitive, Analytical and Amiable. The book describes how one can learn to identify these styles and establish a relationship that can be profitable to all. Identifying these personality styles will also assist in every aspect of your career.


Books published by Don Gabor include How to Start a Conversation, Talking with Confidence for the Painfully Shy, Words that Win, Big Things Happen When You Do the Little Things Right. His books have been translated into more than a dozen foreign languages. Don was a media spokesperson fro Grand Marnier, Sprint and Frito-Lay and is a frequent guest with hundreds of print, radio and television media, including “60 Minutes with Andy Rooney”.

The CharityWorks GreenHouse, a designer show house opening in October 2009, is the right house at the right time for the right cause! Under the direction of Design Chair, Barry Dixon, our team of premiere designers will transform a new carbon-neutral home in McLean, Virginia into a haven for a 21st century lifestyle focused on community connectivity, health and greater respect for our planet. Proceeds from the show house will help the Friendship Public Charter School make dreams come true for schoolchildren in some of Washington, D.C.’s most challenging neighborhoods. An additional grant will benefit the McLean Project for the Arts to support their educational arts outreach program.

USGBC design Competition- ends October 2009

USGBC, The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and The Hospitality Industry Network (NEWH) are sponsoring the Sustainable Suite Design Competition to help drive green design practices within the hotel industry. This competition provides a platform for student and professional teams from around the world to present their approach to green hotel room interior design.The winning design will be built as a model guest room to be presented as an educational display for the design industry, hotel owners and brands, and corporate travel executives. Additionally the winning team and design will be profiled in Hospitality Design, ASID ICON, and the NEWH Magazine. Entries are due by August 31, 2009, and judging will be completed by October 1, 2009. The winning design team must commit to producing construction documents within six-weeks of award notification for model room fabrication. The Sustainable Suite will be unveiled at HDExpo in Las Vegas, NV in May 2010.
