One of the District's most well-known modern furnishings stores, Apartment Zero in Penn Quarter, is closing. "It's sad. We love our customers. . . . Ten years has been a great, long run," co-owner Douglas Burton says. However, "we aren't closing the business; we're relocating and reorganizing it."
The decision was made in part because the landlord wants to remodel the building and is not renewing leases. Also, the business is "evolving," Burton says. Apartment Zero's customers are changing; retail sales have dropped, and demand for interior design services has increased.
So starting Wednesday, everything at Apartment Zero will be on sale.
Stop in and take advantage of the sales

Hello Design lovers! Douglas from Apartment Zero here. LOVE this blog...i wish we had it 10 years ago when we first opened...just a point of clarifcation, that the Post forgot to mention. we are not closing!! we are just MOVING...we signed a 10 year lease in 1999 and it expires next month in 2009. that's it...of course because of the poor economy, whenever someone sees a store moving they think "closing"...in fact, it was always part of our plan to be in that location for only 10 years...now we can move on and open our three new concepts in 2010. stay tuned! and thanks for your support
I will miss Apartment Zero! They are one of the few independently owned stores left in DC. I remember when I first moved here, they had just opened (that was 10 years ago) and they were the only place around to find really cutting edge design. I went to the Karim Rashid event at their showroom when he came to speak and he signed my shirt! So cool. I wish them well and can't wait to see what cool thing they do next!
